Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Her Mother: Their Story

When Dee Dee first stated that her daughter Gypsy Rose suffered from sleep apnea, Gypsy Rose was just a little child. Gypsy Rose was born in 1991. When Gypsy was eight years old, Dee said that she suffered from leukemia and muscular dystrophy and needed a wheelchair and a feeding tube. Dee Dee also added that Gypsy was dependent on a feeding tube. In addition to seizures and asthma, Dee Dee’s daughter also had the hearing and vision abnormalities and other medical conditions, which she detailed in her account of her daughter’s medical history.

Because of what Dee Dee did, Gypsy was forced to use a breathing machine while she slept and was given different drugs. She also underwent several surgical treatments, some performed on her eyes, and some of her salivary glands were removed. The reality, however, was that Gypsy could walk, did not require a feeding tube, and did not have cancer. It was only because her mother shaved her head that she was born without hair. This condition caused her to exaggerate her daughter’s health problems to garner attention and sympathy for the challenges of caring for a sick child.

When it came to Gypsy’s diagnoses, medical testing frequently produced inconclusive or contradictory results; yet, Dee Dee would not continue to see any physicians who questioned the severity of her daughter’s conditions. And many of Dee Dee’s caretakers complied with her wishes in this matter. She had completed some nursing schooling, so she could precisely characterize Gypsy’s symptoms. Additionally, she occasionally administered medication to Gypsy to simulate the symptoms of other ailments. In addition to being lovely, Dee Dee appeared to be quite devoted to her daughter. When Gypsy was old enough to communicate, Dee Dee gave her the advice to tell her not to provide information during their appointments, as Dee Dee was the one who always related Gypsy’s bogus medical history. Gypsy was never able to talk.

After Dee Dee was murdered, many people who knew Gypsy questioned why she had gone to such lengths as to kill her. Gypsy’s mother was one among these people. She could walk; therefore, it would have been quite easy for her to reveal Dee Dee’s lies by standing up in public. However, Gypsy had been socialized to feel that nobody would accept her story. She went on to Explain, “I was too scared to get out of the wheelchair, and I had no idea what my mother would react if she saw me. I did not know someone whom I could put my faith in.”

The reality was that Gypsy’s mother had spent her entire life controlling and supervising her daughter in every aspect of her life. She was not permitted to attend class at any time. Dee Dee told everyone that her daughter Gypsy had a mental age of seven, even though Gypsy had a normal intelligence level. When they were in public, Dee Dee never let go of Gypsy’s hand and would gently squeeze it when she needed her daughter to stay quiet.
