Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Her Mother: Their Story

Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, constantly made health-related assertions growing up, which led to some alarming diagnoses and various forms of medical treatment. Rose Blanchard witnessed this throughout her childhood. However, Gypsy wasn’t genuinely sick, and her mother had lied about the symptoms she was experiencing all along.

The experts believe that Dee Dee’s actions were caused by the mental disorder known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Dee pretended to induce illness in her daughter because she wanted to play the role of a caretaker for her daughter. The truth about Gypsy and her mother didn’t come to light until 2015 when it was revealed that Gypsy had planned for an internet boyfriend to kill Dee Dee.

Dee Dee began pretending that Gypsy had different illnesses when Gypsy was a baby

When Dee Dee first stated that her daughter Gypsy Rose suffered from sleep apnea, Gypsy Rose was just a little child. Gypsy Rose was born in 1991. When Gypsy was eight years old, Dee said that she suffered from leukemia and muscular dystrophy and needed a wheelchair and a feeding tube. Dee Dee also added that Gypsy was dependent on a feeding tube. In addition to seizures and asthma, Dee Dee’s daughter also had the hearing and vision abnormalities and other medical conditions, which she detailed in her account of her daughter’s medical history.

Because of what Dee Dee did, Gypsy was forced to use a breathing machine while she slept and was given different drugs. She also underwent several surgical treatments, some performed on her eyes, and some of her salivary glands were removed. When Gypsy’s teeth became decayed, they had to be extracted; this may have been the result of her drugs, a lack of salivary glands, or simple carelessness.

The reality, however, was that Gypsy could walk, did not require a feeding tube, and did not have cancer. It was only because her mother shaved her head that she was born without hair. It is believed that Dee suffered from a mental condition known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy, also known as a factitious disorder imposed on another. This condition caused her to exaggerate her daughter’s health problems to garner attention and sympathy for the challenges of caring for a sick child.

Dee Dee appeared to be a charming, devoted mother, so people believed her

When it came to Gypsy’s diagnoses, medical testing frequently produced inconclusive or contradictory results; yet, Dee Dee would not continue to see any physicians who questioned the severity of her daughter’s conditions. And many of Dee Dee’s caretakers complied with her wishes in this matter. She had completed some nursing schooling, so she could precisely characterize Gypsy’s symptoms. Additionally, she occasionally administered medication to Gypsy to simulate the symptoms of other ailments. In addition to being lovely, Dee Dee appeared to be quite devoted to her daughter. When Gypsy was old enough to communicate, Dee Dee gave her the advice to tell her not to provide information during their appointments, as Dee Dee was the one who always related Gypsy’s bogus medical history. Gypsy was never able to talk.

Dee Dee shared the news with Rod Blanchard, Gypsy’s father, that their daughter suffered from a chromosomal condition that was the root cause of her myriad health problems. He praised Dee Dee for the careful attention that she had provided. Dee Dee and Gypsy had to leave their home because some members of Dee Dee’s family had become suspicious. After all, Gypsy didn’t appear to require the use of a wheelchair.

As a result of Dee Dee’s assertion that she was a victim of Hurricane Katrina, she and Gypsy were given financial aid to relocate from Louisiana to Missouri in the year 2005. There, Dee Dee continued to take Gypsy to her scheduled checkups at the medical facility. Hurricane Katrina served as a convenient alibi for the disappearance of medical records.

Even when Gypsy was a teenager, Dee Dee still claimed she was sick and began to lie about Gypsy’s age

In 2008, Gypsy and Dee Dee relocated to a new residence in Springfield, Missouri, in the state of Missouri. It was constructed by Habitat for Humanity, and in addition to having a handicapped ramp, it was painted pink. Gypsy and Dee Dee also got rewards, some of which included trips to Disney World and performances that charitable organizations sponsored. Dee Dee never stopped basking in the recognition she earned for being such a committed caregiver during the entire process.

Gypsy went to a neurologist in Missouri when she was 14 years old. After examining her, the neurologist concluded that she was a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Despite this, the doctor never reported her case to the relevant authorities. In later interviews, he expressed his opinion that the evidence wasn’t sufficient to warrant action. In 2009, it was reported to the authorities that Dee Dee’s statements of Gypsy’s ailments had no medical validity, according to an anonymous report that was filed. Due to this, two social workers went to their house to investigate, but Dee Dee convinced them there was nothing wrong.

Dee Dee started telling lies about Gypsy’s age as she got older, and she even changed the dates on her daughter’s birth certificate to make it look like she was born much earlier than she was. However, Dee Dee was finding it increasingly difficult to maintain control of Gypsy.

Gypsy convinced a man she met online to kill Dee Dee

In 2011, Gypsy attempted to flee from her mother by eloping with a man she had met at a science fiction conference. She was unsuccessful in this endeavor. However, Dee Dee found them quickly through their shared connections with other people. She persuaded the man that Gypsy was a minor, even though she was 19. After returning to their house, Gypsy claims that Dee Dee destroyed her computer and forced her to stay in bed using physical force. Gypsy also revealed that her mother sometimes slapped her and refused to feed her when she was a child.

In the end, Gypsy was successful in reconnecting to the network. She found her way to Nicholas Godejohn after signing up for a Christian dating website. She tells him the truth about her mother’s acts, and she asks him to kill Dee Dee so they can be together. After that, she told him the truth about her mother’s actions. In June 2015, he went to her residence and stabbed Dee while Gypsy waited in the toilet with her ears covered.

After returning to his house in Wisconsin, Gypsy and Godejohn were discovered by law enforcement officers there. Gypsy had made two posts on the Facebook account that she and her mother used jointly. One of those posts said, “That b***h is dead!” She then revealed that she posted the posts because she wished for her mother’s body to be located.

Gypsy was ‘afraid’ and believed she ‘didn’t have anyone to trust’

After Dee Dee was murdered, many people who knew Gypsy questioned why she had gone to such lengths as to kill her. Gypsy’s mother was one among these people. She could walk; therefore, it would have been quite easy for her to reveal Dee Dee’s lies by standing up in public. However, Gypsy had been socialized to feel that nobody would accept her story. She went on to Explain, “I was too scared to get out of the wheelchair, and I had no idea what my mother would react if she saw me. I did not know someone whom I could put my faith in.”

The reality was that Gypsy’s mother had spent her entire life controlling and supervising her daughter in every aspect of her life. She was not permitted to attend class at any time. Dee Dee told everyone that her daughter Gypsy had a mental age of seven, even though Gypsy had a normal intelligence level. When they were in public, Dee Dee never let go of Gypsy’s hand and would gently squeeze it when she needed her daughter to stay quiet.

An authority on the Munchausen condition by proxy known as Dr. Marc Feldman made the following statement regarding Gypsy’s life and actions: “The control was total in the same way that a kidnapped victim is sometimes in entire control of the situation in which they find themselves. To all intents and purposes, her kid was being held as a hostage, and I believe that we are able to comprehend the crime that was committed as the act of a captive attempting to break free.”

Gypsy is ‘not happy’ that Dee Dee is dead

As Gypsy’s medical records documented the abuse she had been subjected to, her attorney arranged a plea deal for the charges she faced in Dee Dee’s death; in 2016, Gypsy pled guilty to second-degree murder. Gypsy’s attorney arranged a plea deal for the charges she faced in Dee Dee’s death; in 2016, Gypsy pled guilty to second-degree murder. She was found guilty and given a sentence of ten years in jail, although beginning in 2024, she will be eligible for parole. In 2018, a jury found Godejohn guilty of first-degree murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison.

According to what Gypsy has said, she did not become aware of the magnitude of her mother’s deception until after Dee Dee passed away. Gypsy had been under the impression that she had leukemia, even though she could walk and eat normally.

Today, Gypsy is in good physical shape. She also claims that she has more freedom in prison than in the life she led with Dee Dee before going to jail. On the other hand, when Dr. Phil questioned whether or not she was happy that her mother had passed away, she responded, “I’m grateful that I’m out of that circumstance, but I’m not happy that she’s dead.” In the year 2024, she will be eligible for parole.”
